From good practice to market proof

Larger and medium-sized business are more inclined to publish sustainability reports

Yet the commercial reality is moving faster than the legal requirement. Even where an SME is not obliged to publish a formal sustainability report, its larger customers, public-sector clients, funders and supply-chain partners may increasingly ask for evidence about emissions, materials, waste, sourcing, working practices and governance.

Where Irish SMEs stand

That is the central message emerging from the 2025 Sustainable SMEs interview analysis, led by Ida Norberg of BioFuel Region with contributions from the project consortium. Sustainable SMEs is an EU Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic initiative involving IWIN; the Sligo-based AIM Centre, which supports manufacturers and supply-chain businesses on their digitalisation journeys; and partners in Finland, Sweden and Iceland. Interviews with 29 companies, supported by a further 32 interviews with SME stakeholders, provide a useful snapshot of where businesses stand and what is holding them back.

The sample is modest – and Iceland was represented by only one company – but the comparisons are still instructive.

The research found that 55% of the companies interviewed were already undertaking some form of sustainability reporting. More than half rated their maturity at four or five on a five-point scale, although these stronger scores came mainly from large and, to a lesser extent, medium-sized businesses. Micro and small enterprises were much less likely to report and typically cited lack of time, people and clarity.

Irish SMEs were generally at an earlier stage than their Finnish and Swedish counterparts. Their approaches were less systematic, automation was limited and there was considerable uncertainty about what information to collect and which rules applied. That finding should not be read as evidence that Irish firms are necessarily less sustainable in practice. Many may already be reducing waste, controlling energy use, buying certified material, managing health and safety and maintaining traceability. The weakness is often that these activities are not consistently measured, documented or presented in a form a customer can readily use.

Lessons from Finland and Sweden

Finland and Sweden offer valuable benchmarks. Finnish SMEs were more likely to integrate sustainability into strategy and operations and to treat it as a competitive advantage. Swedish firms benefited from a stronger culture of voluntary reporting, more advanced digital tools and active industry networks. Even there, however, reporting was far from effortless: manual processes remained common, regulations were seen as complex and Scope 3 emissions – those arising across the wider value chain – were particularly difficult to measure.

These international findings closely match the practical challenges of the wood and furniture sector. The report identifies component-level carbon footprints, raw-material traceability, Scope 3 emissions and the tracking of production side-streams as recurring difficulties. For an IWIN member, that can mean assembling information from board and hardware suppliers, energy bills, transport records, waste contractors, production systems and purchasing files. If each customer asks for the information in a different format, the burden quickly multiplies.

Start with the information that matters

The answer is not to begin with a glossy report or expensive software. It is to build a reliable, proportionate information system. The EU’s Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs (VSME) is intended to give smaller firms a common framework with which to answer recurring requests from customers, banks and other stakeholders. In practice, a sensible starting point for an IWIN business is a short list of measures that matter commercially: energy and fuel use; waste by type and destination; recycled or certified material content; key supplier information; transport data; workplace safety; training; and basic governance controls.

Much of this information may already exist in invoices, spreadsheets, ERP systems and certificates. The first task is to assign responsibility, agree definitions and collect it at regular intervals. Excel may be entirely adequate at the outset. More sophisticated platforms and dashboards become worthwhile when the volume of data, number of sites or customer demands justify them. The research shows that even mature Finnish and Swedish companies combine specialist tools with Excel, ERP systems, consultants and manual work.

Making support more sector-specific

Irish businesses are not without support. Interviewees pointed to Local Enterprise Offices, SEAI, Enterprise Ireland programmes, Climate Toolkit 4 Business, Climate Ready, consultants and peer networks. The greater opportunity for IWIN is to make that support sector-specific: common definitions, shared templates and realistic benchmarks for manufacturers, joinery firms, fit-out contractors and furniture businesses could substantially reduce duplication.

Turning evidence into commercial value

Sustainability reporting should ultimately earn its keep. Stakeholders interviewed in Ireland associated it with efficiency gains, cost savings, competitiveness and access to funding. Across the wider study, proactive reporting was also linked with market access, stronger customer trust and, in some cases, winning contracts. The immediate objective, therefore, is not reporting for its own sake. It is to turn good practice into credible evidence – and credible evidence into lower costs, stronger tenders and more resilient customer relationships.

A practical sustainability pathway for SMEs: start with the next 90 days

For a small business, the hardest part of sustainability can be deciding where to begin. There is no shortage of terminology, questionnaires or software. What is often missing is a manageable sequence of actions that fits around running the company.

For IWIN members, a useful starting point is a 90-day plan. The aim is to understand the business’s position, identify immediate improvements and establish reliable records. It is a starting framework, with the pace adjusted where an applicable legal deadline requires faster action.

Days 1–30: establish the starting position

Appoint one person to coordinate the work, with support from management. That person does not need to become an expert in every regulation. They do need access to purchasing, finance, production and staff information, and enough authority to obtain answers.

Gather twelve months of electricity and fuel bills, waste records and available water information. Identify the principal materials purchased and the suppliers responsible for them. Record existing policies, certifications and customer questionnaires. Keep the original documents in a shared location with clear filenames.

Look beyond environmental issues. ESG also includes social and governance matters. Review how the business manages staff safety, training, responsibilities, complaints and ethical purchasing. Identify gaps honestly. A policy copied from another company offers little value if nobody understands or follows it.

Create a separate list of legal and contractual requirements. Distinguish obligations applying to the business from voluntary standards and individual customer requests. Product types, supply chain roles and export markets can change the answer. Obtain appropriate advice where a requirement is unclear.

Days 31–60: choose improvements with a measurable benefit

Select three priorities that the business can realistically deliver. These might involve energy use, material yield and supplier information. Each should have an owner, a target date and a defined measure of success.

An energy review could examine compressed air leaks, heating controls or equipment left running between shifts. A production review could investigate repeated cutting waste or finishing defects. A purchasing review could establish which suppliers can provide reliable material and traceability documentation.

SEAI offers energy audit support for eligible businesses. Its published scheme provides a €2,000 voucher towards a professional audit, subject to eligibility conditions. Check the current requirements before applying, particularly where energy consumption could trigger separate mandatory audit obligations.

An audit should help identify priorities and estimated costs. Use that evidence when considering larger investments. Solar panels, heating upgrades or new machinery may have a role, but assess the actual operating pattern, technical suitability and financial return before committing.

Days 61–90: organise the evidence and review progress

Bring the results into a simple management record. A spreadsheet may be sufficient initially. Show the baseline, action taken, responsible person, expenditure and outcome. Keep estimates clearly separate from measured results.

Track both total consumption and an appropriate measure of efficiency. Electricity per production hour may help some businesses; material yield may be more useful for others. Choose measures that reflect operations, and record changes in product mix or workload that affect comparisons.

If calculating greenhouse gas emissions, document the conversion factors, reporting period and boundaries. Direct fuel use and purchased electricity are different categories. Purchased materials and other value chain activities can also matter. Start with reliable information and make the limitations visible.

Use reporting to support the work

The Commission’s recommended Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs provides a structure for businesses choosing to report. It can help organise information for customers and financial institutions. Review its basic requirements before deciding whether more extensive reporting would add value.

Avoid treating a completed questionnaire as the finish line. Reporting should explain the business’s position and support decisions. It cannot substitute for meeting an applicable legal obligation, nor does adopting a voluntary standard make every environmental claim automatically valid.

Prepare a short customer information pack using verified records. Depending on the business, this could contain relevant policies, material specifications, certification details, improvement measures and contact information. Check that every document relates to the correct business, product and period.

Make progress part of normal management

Set aside time each month to review the priorities. Involve the people doing the work: production teams often know where materials are damaged, machinery runs unnecessarily or instructions create avoidable rework. Their input can make proposed changes more practical.

At the end of 90 days, review what improved, what remains uncertain and what should happen next. Keep successful actions, revise weak assumptions and select the next manageable priorities. Share progress in specific terms, with evidence and context.

The first objective is a business that understands its responsibilities, knows its starting position and can demonstrate progress. That foundation makes the next decision easier, whether it concerns compliance, investment, a customer tender or product development.

Europe’s sustainability landscape: what Irish SMEs need to know

For many Irish businesses, sustainability has become a confusing mix of regulations, customer questionnaires and competing advice. One week the message is that reporting requirements are expanding. The next, Europe is simplifying them. For an owner managing production, staff and customer deadlines, it can be difficult to know what deserves attention.

For members of the Irish Wood & Interiors Network, the sensible response is to understand which rules apply directly, which expectations come through customers, and which improvements make commercial sense. Those are different questions, and treating them separately can save considerable time and expense.

Reporting rules are changing

The European Union has moved to reduce the administrative burden of corporate sustainability reporting. In February 2026, the Council approved changes narrowing the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive’s scope to companies with more than 1,000 employees and net annual turnover above €450 million. National implementation and transitional arrangements still matter when assessing an individual business.

Most small furniture manufacturers, joinery businesses and interiors suppliers will sit outside that revised direct reporting scope. However, that does not remove their wider environmental, employment or product obligations. Nor does it mean customers will stop asking about sustainability.

An architect may need material information for a specification. A contractor may require evidence of responsible sourcing. A major customer may ask for energy and emissions data. These requests should be understood on their own terms, rather than automatically described as a legal requirement for every supplier to produce a corporate ESG report.

A more proportionate approach for smaller businesses

The European Commission’s recommended Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs, known as VSME, provides a useful starting point. It was designed to help smaller businesses respond more consistently to information requests from larger companies and financial institutions.

For an IWIN member, the practical value is having a recognisable structure for the information the business chooses to disclose. It can help replace repeated, disconnected exercises with a more organised approach. It is a voluntary reporting framework, rather than a certificate confirming compliance with every sustainability obligation.

Before commissioning an extensive report, ask what the customer actually needs, whether existing records can answer the question, and whether a proportionate VSME approach would be accepted.

Timber traceability deserves particular attention

For wood and interiors businesses, the EU Deforestation Regulation is especially relevant. It concerns specified commodities and products, including wood and certain derived products. Applicability depends on the product classification and the company’s role in the supply chain.

The Commission’s published timetable provides for application from 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators, and for micro and small operators already covered by the EU Timber Regulation. Other micro and small operators have a later date of 30 June 2027.

Businesses should therefore avoid assuming that every small company has the later deadline. Review the products involved, establish your role and ask suppliers what traceability information they can provide. Certification can support responsible purchasing, but it should not be assumed to replace the regulation’s specific requirements.

Product design is becoming part of the picture

Europe’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products framework also deserves attention. Furniture is included in the first working plan, with 2028 identified as the indicative year for adoption of product measures. This is a planning milestone, rather than a universal furniture compliance deadline.

Digital Product Passports are part of this developing framework. There is no blanket requirement under it for every furniture product to carry a passport today. Detailed obligations depend on the relevant product rules. Nevertheless, organising material, component and repair information now is sensible preparation.

For manufacturers, this raises useful design questions. Can a damaged panel be replaced? Can upholstery be renewed? Can different materials be separated? Can customers obtain care instructions and spare components? These questions connect sustainability with product quality and customer service.

Focus on what the business can control

The regulatory landscape will continue to evolve. Businesses need a reliable way to monitor relevant changes without allowing uncertainty to delay straightforward improvements. Energy bills, waste records, purchasing information and staff procedures provide a practical foundation.

Choose one person to coordinate the work. Keep a short register of relevant obligations and customer requirements. Review it regularly, using official guidance and specialist advice where the business’s activities require it. Avoid buying a large reporting system before deciding what information you need it to manage.

Sustainability in wood and interiors: where the risks and opportunities lie

Irish wood and interiors businesses already understand the pressure of rising costs, tight delivery schedules and demanding customers. Sustainability adds another consideration, but it also offers a useful way to examine where money, materials and commercial opportunities are being lost.

The strongest business case starts with specific questions. How much purchased board becomes saleable product? How much electricity is used when production has stopped? Can a product be repaired economically? Can the sales team support its environmental claims? The answers reveal practical opportunities as well as weaknesses.

The risk of being unable to demonstrate what you do

A business may source responsibly, minimise waste and manufacture durable products, yet struggle to explain any of this when a tender arrives. If supporting information is scattered across purchasing files and individual inboxes, good practice becomes difficult to demonstrate.

Consider a fitout supplier asked for material specifications, sourcing evidence and product care information within a short tender deadline. Having those records ready can improve the quality and speed of its response. Missing information may weaken the submission, even where the underlying product is strong.

The commercial response is to build a reusable evidence file around the questions customers actually ask. Confirm which documents must be current, who owns them and whether they apply to the precise product being offered.

Waste is a cost before it reaches the skip

Material waste includes more than the disposal charge. An offcut may also contain purchasing cost, transport, handling and machining time. A rejected finished component can carry an even greater investment of labour and energy.

Start by examining a recurring product or process. Compare material purchased with usable output. Record why components are rejected. Review cutting patterns, storage damage and changes made after production begins. A small improvement repeated across regular orders can be worth more than a highly visible but marginal environmental initiative.

Recovering value from offcuts can be useful, provided there is a realistic outlet. Prevention should receive attention first. Making unnecessary waste more marketable does not address the cost of producing it.

Circular design can create a service opportunity

Circular design asks how products can remain useful for longer. For furniture and interiors, practical options include replaceable components, removable covers, accessible fixings and finishes that can be maintained or renewed.

A manufacturer could explore refurbishment services for existing commercial furniture. A joinery business could offer replacement fronts where suitable carcasses remain sound. A supplier could provide spare hardware and clear repair instructions. These are possible business models to test, rather than guaranteed sources of profit.

The economics need scrutiny. Who pays for collection? What condition must returned products be in? Can the refurbished item meet performance requirements? Will servicing costs exceed the revenue? A limited pilot with an existing customer can answer these questions before a wider commitment.

Innovation should solve a defined problem

Digital tools create opportunities to improve cutting efficiency, monitor equipment and organise product information. Material development can also offer alternatives in panels, finishes, adhesives and textiles. The appropriate choice depends on the application and the evidence available.

For example, a monitoring system may help identify equipment running unnecessarily outside production hours. Better nesting software may improve board utilisation. A product information system may make sourcing records easier to retrieve. Each investment should have a clear purpose, an accountable owner and a way to measure results.

New materials need the same discipline. Compare durability, fire performance, indoor air requirements, availability and end of life options alongside environmental information. A material substitution that creates premature failure can undermine both the commercial and environmental case.

Better evidence can strengthen market positioning

Irish manufacturers can build a compelling proposition around craftsmanship, durability, service and traceable materials. Those qualities become more persuasive when supported by specific evidence. Explain what was measured, which product is covered and what limitations apply.

An Environmental Product Declaration can provide structured information about a product’s environmental impacts. It should be assessed against customer needs and the relevant methodology. It does not automatically establish that a product is environmentally superior to every alternative, and comparisons require compatible assumptions and boundaries.

Likewise, broad phrases such as “eco-friendly” can create uncertainty about what is actually being promised. A precise statement about a verified material attribute or documented improvement is more useful to a specifier making a purchasing decision.

Build the opportunity around your own customers

There is little value in investing heavily in an initiative that customers do not need and the business cannot sustain. Speak to a small number of important buyers. Ask what sustainability information affects their decisions and where suppliers currently fall short.

Through its participation in the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic Sustainable SMEs project, IWIN is helping bring practical sustainability reporting questions into discussion across the network.

Members can use that conversation to identify shared challenges and test workable responses. The opportunity lies in combining credible evidence with better products, more efficient operations and services that customers are prepared to buy.

What an amazing week we had in Chicago! Myself, Eoin Ryan from The Galtee Group , and Damian Woods from W.Howard 'The MDF Specialists' attended the North American Building Material Distribution Association (NBMDA) distributors’ event, with over 1,000 delegates present. I had the privilege to do a presentation on behalf of the Irish Wood & Interiors Network ( IWIN ), showcasing the expertise and capabilities of our member companies. I also shared our collaboration with Cieblink , who are launching a Product Information Management (PIM) software we are starting to implement in the network.
It was a brilliant opportunity to connect with dozens of prospective buyers, build key relationships, and generate leads for future business. We were lucky to be hosted by industry experts Freya Hannah (Cieblink) and David Smith from The David Smith Group, who introduced us to many of the top buyers/distributors in the US and Canadian markets. The event was packed with key figures from the North American and Canadian building materials supply industry, particularly woodworking products and sheet materials—a perfect fit for our network.
We also had some great experiences exploring Chicago, including seeing 9-time Grammy winner, Buddy Guy, perform live—an unforgettable night! We toured the city and had a productive meeting with David O'Flaherty of Enterprise Ireland USA , who shared that Chicago is home to 200,000 Irish diaspora, 25,000 of whom are in construction—highlighting the strong cultural ties and opportunities for Irish suppliers in this market.
The US is open for business—with trade from China down, buyers are actively looking for alternatives. For Irish companies ready to supply, there’s a real chance to make an impact.
It was a smashing week, and we’re excited for what’s ahead!

Over 60 attendees and 50 golfers took to the fairways at Carton House on September 11th for the IWIN Annual Golf Day — and what a day it was. Sunshine, great company, and more sand than the Sahara made for a fun mix of competition and craic.
Huge thanks to Liam Mc Cool and the Carton House team for top-class hospitality all day.

17th Redevelopment Summit in Lisbo

Just back from the 17th Redevelopment Summit in Lisbon, hosted by GBB Venture s, and what an excellent event it was! The format provided invaluable opportunities to connect with key figures from the Saudi construction industry and showcase the best of Ireland’s contract interior manufacturing. We had brilliant conversations and insightful meetings that we hope will bring lasting value to our members. The Saudi market, with its ambitious 2030 vision and $2 trillion in planned investment, offers incredible opportunities for those ready to engage and build strong supply chain partnerships. From cutting-edge cities to luxurious Red Sea resorts, we’re excited about Ireland’s potential to be a key player in this dynamic market. It was nice to note that we weren't the only Irish at the event - it was inspiring to see Mark Kennedy , Head of Design at NEOM Magna, present the futuristic vision for the Magna project, which includes a stretch of 120km along the Red Sea coast, featuring 12 distinct resorts. LIGNA machinery show in Germany

It has been an action-packed couple of days at the LIGNA machinery show in Germany. The speed at which technology is advancing in the woodworking industry is both exciting and a bit daunting. Many robotics and AI solutions are being adopted, particularly in areas such as sanding, storage, and assembly.

One impressive highlight was an AI-enhanced CNC machine on display, which allowed users to interact directly with the machines via Chat. For instance, you could explain a request, such as creating a replacement gable for a previous order, and the machine could just do it without sending a program instruction. Or even ask it for performance stats etc.

Some great banter was had on the familiar Combilift stand as we witnessed a bit of expert haggling take place between Monaghan ( Martin McVicar ) and Galway ( Derek Deane )...not sure who won out, time will tell:). It is certainly impressive to see Combilift fly the flag at such a landmark show. A special thanks to Martin and for the warm welcome.

With a turnout of over 80 people from the Irish Contract Manufacturing sector, the event delved into the transformative realm of AI and its implications on manufacturing processes.

Attendees had the opportunity to explore the cutting-edge facilities at IMR, gaining firsthand exposure to the innovative technologies shaping the industry. A huge thanks goes out to our excellent speakers - Jason Carey , Mark Flynn , Jim O'Hagan , and Eoin Carroll . Absolutely thrilled to launch our second issue of the Irish Contract Interiors magazine on behalf of IWIN ! This 132-page issue is packed with excellent editorial from manufacturers all over Ireland, showcasing the collective strength of this thriving industry. The magazine is distributed to manufacturers, contractors, project managers, architects, and all the key players in the construction industry in Ireland.

The significance of this industry is evident in every public building in Ireland, including schools, hospitals, universities, and hotels, all of which feature design and joinery elements from this group of manufacturers. Their impact is now being felt overseas as more and more companies are taking on ambitious international projects.

This week, we have a group exhibiting at the prestigious interzum cologne show, and next month, a delegation will travel to the US to explore opportunities for expansion in that market, with the valuable support of Aidan McKenna and his team at Enterprise Ireland . Eoin Carroll is a data analytics and strategy specialist with over ten years’ experience helping businesses unlock the value of their data. With a background in engineering, analytics, and business intelligence, he has worked with multinationals and SMEs across manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and retail sectors. He leads a team delivering business intelligence, predictive modelling, and digital strategies that drive efficiency and growth.

As the founder of his own business, Eoin understands the challenges SMEs face. He specialises in phased digital transformation—maximising current systems, improving processes, and using data-driven insights to reduce costs. Eoin holds a B.Eng. in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (DCU), an MSc in Analytics, and an MBA from UCD Smurfit Business School.

The response has been extremely positive, indicating that this is something the industry has been eager for and is excited to see continue. The Head of Operations at Uconia - Jason Carey

Jason Carey is a technology and performance specialist within the construction and manufacturing sectors. He is currently the Head of Operations at Uconia , a digital project management platform where he helps companies and projects streamline their site operations using Lean Last Planner principles, AI, and dashboard reporting. Wayloader is currently operating across multiple projects in Ireland, UK and Europe.

Prior to this, Jason spent nearly six years at Errigal , where he was Head of Innovation and Analytics, leading major digital transformation initiatives both internally and on live construction projects. His work included integrating machine learning on-site using 360-degree camera computer vision technology, developing an in-house facial recognition system and a bespoke Errigal App, and investing in IoT wearables to drive performance and improve health and safety across teams on-site.

Jason holds a Master’s in Software Design with Artificial Intelligence, his innovative mindset ensures he is always looking ahead and brings a strong focus on how data and digital tools can translate into real-world performance gains — in business and beyond.

Away from the tech world, Jason remains a top-level Gaelic footballer with Scotstown GAA. He has been fortunate to be part of a successful team and values the link between team performance in a sporting context and the business world.

At this event, Jason will share insights on how emerging technologies, such as AI and advanced digital tools, are being applied in live construction and manufacturing environments — and what that means for the future of operations and leadership in our industry.

This new industry journal is designed to connect the entire contract interior supply chain, with copies being distributed to manufacturers, architects, quantity surveyors, project managers, interior designers, main contractors, and developers.
This is a major milestone for IWIN members and a significant step forward in uniting our industry. By promoting collaboration and harnessing the collective strength of our sector, we aim to create new opportunities both at home and abroad. With trends such as Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and industrialised construction gaining momentum, this publication arrives at a crucial time to help our industry stay ahead in a rapidly evolving market.

Key Goals This Year Within The IWIN Network

One of our key goals this year within the IWIN Network is to create a recruitment platform specific to our industry. We have made significant progress on this platform and hope to launch it in April 2025. As part of this initiative, we are preparing a promotional video to showcase our industry as a great place to work and build a career. Last week, we were on-site capturing footage at Western Postform Limited and Loughnanes Joinery , two excellent state-of-the-art facilities. Industry Event at ATU Connemara

�� Great Day at ATU Connemara
Last Thursday, I had the chance to attend an industry event at ATU Connemara where 15 or so companies from the contract interiors sector came together to meet with students and showcase what career opportunities are out there.
It was really interesting to hear the presentations from different companies and see just how much potential there is in this industry for young people to build fantastic careers. One that really stood out to me was The Deluxe Group — their work on some of the world's biggest theme parks and cruise ships is seriously impressive.
We're lucky in Ireland to have some amazing companies in this sector, like Specialist Group , The Deluxe Group , GEM Joinery , Western Postform Limited and Johnston Shopfitters , MLK Mark Lohan Kitchens , Merenda and Castlebrook , to name just a few.
Fair play to Paul Leamy and the team who organised the event — it was a great way for the industry to see the brilliant talent coming out of ATU Connemara every year.
If you're in the contract interiors industry, I'd definitely recommend getting involved in this event in the future. It's well worth it if you're looking to connect with top young talent who could make a big difference in your company’s future.

A Visit to O'Donnell Furniture Makers

I had the pleasure of visiting Katherine O'Sullivan and Aodh O Donnell at O'Donnell Furniture Makers in Skibbereen, a founding member of the Irish Wood and Interiors Network. They gave me a warm welcome after my long trip from Monaghan, and I was impressed by their extensive, state-of-the-art premises.

O'Donnell Furniture has been crafting bespoke furniture for over 120 years, serving hospitality giants like Marriott, Hilton, and Crowne Plaza, while also creating custom pieces for the residential and marine sectors. Their work spans Ireland, the UK, and Europe, proudly flying the flag for Irish manufacturing on an international stage.

It was particularly interesting to hear about the logistical gymnastics involved in getting their furniture delivered and installed in some far-flung locations. It’s clear that their expertise isn’t just in making quality furniture—it’s in ensuring it arrives flawlessly, no matter where in the world the project takes them.

Beyond their reputation for quality craftsmanship, O’Donnell Furniture has taken an unexpected but fascinating step—repurposing part of their factory to provide unique studio facilities for the Irish filmmaking industry. This has brought real buzz to the local community, with the extra economic activity that comes with film production, but it also shows O'Donnell's readiness to diversify and think outside the box. Who knows, we might be spotting an O’Donnell wardrobe in the background of a hit Netflix show!"**

A Visit to Holbein Joinery in Kenmare!
I recently had the chance to visit Holbein Joinery in Kenmare, Co. Kerry, and see the skill and craftsmanship behind their work. Oliver Holbein and Colm Holbein are second-generation joiners, continuing a tradition that started over 35 years ago when their father, Manfred Holbein, founded the business. Originally from Germany, Manfred brought his expertise in fine furniture-making to Ireland, blending traditional European techniques with locally sourced materials. Today, Oliver and Colm are building on that legacy, producing high-quality joinery and furniture across Kerry and Cork.
With Kenmare’s stunning landscape as a backdrop, it’s clear why sustainability is such a big focus for them. Their eco-friendly approach, combined with expert craftsmanship, sets them apart in the industry.
As part of IWIN , we’re delighted to support Holbein Joinery as they continue to grow. With plans for a major factory expansion, exciting times are ahead, and I’m looking forward to seeing where they go next.

Factory Tour - W.Howard 'The MDF Specialists'

I recently had the opportunity to visit Paul McKenna , Managing Director of W.Howard 'The MDF Specialists' , for a factory tour. It was impressive to see how the company has embraced automation and lean processes to thrive in an ultra-competitive market both domestically and internationally.

What stood out most was the team’s commitment and engagement to continuous improvement. They take real pride in their work, actively contribute to improvements, and create a positive and productive environment.

W.Howard has a strong future ahead, and I look forward to seeing their continued growth into new markets, providing any support we can offer from the IWIN network.

Surface Design Show 2025

Last week, I enjoyed an interesting day exploring the Surface Design Show 2025 at London's Business Design Centre! The event showcased impressive innovations in surface materials and sustainable technologies.

A highlight was connecting with IWIN member Ronan Haslette from Merenda at the Alpi S.p.A. stand, a renowned Italian high-end veneer and surface manufacturer with some very interesting architectural finishes.

I was particularly impressed by the focus on sustainability across the show, with manufacturers showcasing innovative ecological panels and recycled materials, especially from Gruppo Saviola.

My final company visit of the year was to Kelwood Beautifully Crafted Wood Windows and Doors (Kells Windows and Doors and Konic Doors), the latest member to join IWIN . Declan and Matthew Grimes, second-generation owner-managers, craft exquisite timber sash windows and exterior doors. The intricate detail and skilled craftsmanship that go into each of their products are world-class and unique in the industry.

Kells Windows has supplied prestigious homes across Ireland, the UK, and the US, and they are set to expand further into these markets. Everything is made to order and customised to client specifications. They use only premium hardwoods or Accoya, materials known for delivering outstanding performance for decades. The blend of fine detail and beautiful finishes, combined with exceptional durability, truly sets Kells apart in the market.

All of this is achieved by a highly skilled team operating in a modern facility equipped with multiple new CNC machines and an automated spray line. Impressively, they even mix their own colors to ensure they can guarantee the performance and finish of their products.

In addition to their standard offerings, Kells provides restoration services and bespoke designs, catering to both traditional and contemporary styles. Their commitment to sustainability is evident through their use of environmentally friendly materials and practices.

Tech startups and multinational corporations get a lot of business attention in Ireland, but companies like FJS Joinery Solutions and DWK are the backbone of the economy in rural Ireland, which is a valued employer of a crew of loyal and highly skilled staff for over 30 years.

Recently, I made the trip to Edenderry, County Offaly, to visit FJS Joinery Solutions and DWK Kitchens to welcome them as new members of IWIN .

From the moment I arrived, their knowledgeable team gave me a warm welcome. Their showroom is impressive, showcasing everything from beautifully crafted traditional in-frame kitchens to sleek, modern designs. As Tom Glynn , the owner, explained, they aim to offer something for everyone, no matter the taste or budget.

Tom gave me an excellent tour of the factory, giving me a real sense of what makes this company successful. It comes down to two key things: first, a commitment to investing in the business by upgrading technology and improving working conditions and second, a focus on building a strong team. This was clear from the showroom staff to the workshop team, where everyone was hard at work, keeping productivity high.

Tom is supported by his sons, Ryan and Ross, ensuring the company has a bright future. FJS and DWK Kitchens are in a strong position, serving both private residential customers through their kitchen business and the commercial interiors market with their bespoke joinery capabilities. This balance allows them to stay adaptable and resilient in changing markets.

What stands out most is their focus on customer satisfaction. From the moment a customer steps into the showroom to the installation and aftercare, everything is done with the customer experience in mind. This is reflected in their excellent reviews, feedback, and strong word-of-mouth referrals.

I’m excited to see how FJS and DWK grow in the coming years and hope that IWIN can support their journey in any way possible.

For over 25 years, MLK has been helping people create their dream kitchens. From designing to manufacturing and fitting, their hand-crafted kitchens are all about quality and style. With showrooms in Galway and Roscommon, they work closely with their customers to bring their ideas to life with personalised 3D designs.

More recently, MLK has branched out into the contract market and carried out significant projects overseas, demonstrating an ambition for international growth.

Mark is making a big name for himself in the kitchen industry. Visiting his factory, it’s obvious how much care and attention goes into every detail, with a real focus on quality, precision and craftsmanship. The setup there is really impressive, with some of the most modern machinery and automation around.

Though, what impressed me the most was Mark's energy and drive to expand the business in a sustainable and methodical way. As Mark himself stated, "The pace of growth must not compromise the customer experience." This commitment to keeping the customer at the center of everything at MLK has been crucial to the company's long-term success and will continue to serve as a guiding principle for future plans.

I look forward to seeing where Mark will take the business next. Rest assured, it will be exciting to follow as he works on expanding the retail, contract, and export sides of his business.

Topopal, an Irish-owned company, specialises in the manufacture and installation of laboratory, cleanroom, and workspace furniture, supporting sectors like medical devices, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, education, and technology.

When siblings work together in a family business, people often think it’s a recipe for conflict. But in my experience, when they’re on the same page and share a vision, they can make fierce progress. EMP Furniture is a great example of this.

Based in Williamstown, Co. Galway, EMP Furniture Manufacturers Ltd has been making beautiful, custom-made furniture since 1981. They’ve become a go-to name for furniture in schools, hotels, and hospitals across Ireland.

One thing that stood out to me when learning about EMP Furniture is the immaculate presentation of their business. George Quinn are market leaders in stair parts manufacturing, supplying joineries and builder providers both in Ireland and the UK. Martin tells me the trend of modernising existing staircases from traditional spindle turnings to a contemporary clean line and minimalistic design has driven the demand for their product in recent years. I had a very interesting visit to one of our IWIN members, P&L Group , in Trim, Co. Meath, where I met with directors Gerard Lee and Tom Potterton . What stood out during the tour was their impressive joinery facility, which allows them to maintain "in-house" control over their fitout projects and enables them to take on even the most complex custom joinery elements. But what truly sets them apart is their ability to handle large-scale, complex projects.

With a client list that includes many of Ireland's top 20 construction companies, P&L Carpentry Group has worked on landmark projects like Leinster House. They also successfully work directly with the client alongside main contractors, helping streamline project delivery. Their team of over fifty people ensures that each project is managed and delivered on time and within budget.

They’ve also made some smart investments recently, such as a 5-axis CNC machine to enhance their joinery capabilities, and they utilize a custom-built mobile app on-site to provide real-time updates to clients and contractors—keeping everyone in the loop. Their progressive approach is further demonstrated by their adoption of an ERP system (Crow’s Nest) for resource management.

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting MEDITE SMARTPLY in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, and meeting with some of the team there, including Rory Rice , Liam Ryan and David Murray . I also had the opportunity to tour their impressive plant where I got to see first-hand the scale and complexity of their MDF production.

Medite is a major player in the MDF and OSB market supplying Ireland, UK, Benelux Countries and the US. They employ over 300 skilled technicians who keep their highly sophisticated machinery running smoothly across both plants in Clonmel and Waterford.

What really sets them apart is their commitment to innovation and sustainability. As part of the Coillte Group, they source their raw materials from sustainably managed forests in Ireland and by converting timber into MDF, they help store carbon in building projects for generations.

Coillte - The future of construction

I had an eye-opening visit to Coillte Nursery in Ballintemple. Listening to the energetic and passionate Ronan O'Keeffe on a tour around the beautiful Carlow countryside, it is hard not to come to the conclusion that the future of construction lies in timber.

With 400 acres dedicated to germinating and processing 30 million trees annually for the Irish Forestry Industry, we have a sustainable resource to meet our construction and joinery needs for generations. The end product is suitable for a wide variety of timber frame construction. Also domestic companies like MEDITE SMARTPLY transform this plentiful supply of home grown raw material into high performing versatile building material such as high quality MDF, Tricoya and OSB.

Through innovative cross-pollination methods, the nursery team has significantly improved tree quality, resulting in faster-growing, denser, and straighter trees with fewer irregularities. A more carbon-hungry tree that will effectively sequester carbon for generations is the result.

Interestingly, one of the techniques in use at the nursery is called "grafting" which involves wrapping a sapling in a branch of a mature tree to trick it into producing seed in less than a year as opposed to 20 years in a natural environment. This radically reduces the amount of time it takes to evolve more effective variants.

The forestry industry's impact on sustainability goals and net-zero targets is significant. Embracing timber as a primary construction material can play a crucial role in achieving a more sustainable future.

Super day at Topform Ltd with David Prendergast where I got the tour of their excellent factory. Thank you to Paul Glynn for the invite. Topform are market leaders in kitchen worktop manufacturing and export much of their product to UK and Europe. They embrace Lean practices and a hunger for continuous improvement is clearly evident with management and staff. Their dedication to quality, service and efficiency allows them to compete with global suppliers in an ultra competitive market.

Many companies I visit see Lean manufacturing as a "one and done" exercise and often only attempt it when a consultant is hired. But Lean requires cultural change and a discipline to continue to improve working practices every single day. Finding just that 1% improvement on a consistent basis compounds to deliver dramatic results.

Walking through the factory floor of Topform and its environs you immediately notice there is no waste, stock pile of off cuts, waste packaging or dust accumulation. Raw material is stored with precision and easy access. The workflow is seamless and logical and the environment is calm and productive. Our industry could learn much from companies like Topform.

I wish all the team there continued success.

Recently, I had the privilege of touring the exceptional facilities of Atlantic Technological University (Letterfrack), thanks to Paul Leamy , Paddy Tobin, and Dermot O'Donovan . Situated against the stunning backdrop of Diamond Hill in Connemara, Letterfrack has been a cornerstone of the wood and interiors industry since the 80s. While traditionally associated with woodcraft, present-day graduates are now industry-ready with cutting-edge skills and knowledge, prepared to excel in a competitive manufacturing landscape.

At Letterfrack, students are trained on the latest industry technologies, including 5-axis CNCs, Alphacam, and BIM, along with training in sustainable manufacturing processes. Graduates are in high demand, often taking on key roles in leading companies such as MJM Marine , Specialist Group - Joinery | Glass | Metal , and Farrell Furniture to name a few. TU Dublin GradX 2023

IWIN were delighted to be asked to evaluate students' work at GradX, the Graduate Exhibition of TU Dublin School of Art and Design, BA Interior / Furniture Design programme (TU975). On behalf of IWIN, a panel of four judges arrived at GradX to view and discuss the work of the students. The panel were: Enda McGonigle from Sofa Source ; Joe Friel from WoodConnect ; Gareth Sherry from IWIN and Sean Philips from OVVO . All four were extremely impressed with the quality and variety of work on display. In particular, the noted the quality of concepts and engagement with very current issue for the furniture, design and production industries. The panel were tasked to award under two broad categories (1) Innovation and (2) Commerciality. The panel were unanimous that more than two projects deserved recognition. Two awards were presented in each category with each recipient receiving a 100 Euro one-for-all voucher and a one year membership of IWIN. All the projects and eight others will be featured on the TU Dublin & IWIN stand at the IFHS show from 2nd to 4th July.

GradX is the highlight of the academic year for students and staff and affords students the opportunity to showcase their imagination, hard work and creativity. IWIN are very keen to build connections and relationships between our industry and education institutes. Linking the future drivers of our industry is so important towards our members' long-term success.

Lamps that are different from each other, but which have the common task of lasting longer, having simple and natural materials such as wood, or the possibility of reusing components or washing them. The different shapes and appearances of the lamps thus offer a variety for every taste to the customer. Minim is a project that minimises forms but maximises functionality.
Design for Disassembly - Laura MacSweeney. This collection of furniture was designed as take-apart technology. The collection consists of three individual materials. This material can be manipulated in multiple ways creating surfaces and texture. For structural purposes, waste mild steel, also known as conduit, was used as well as locally sourced ash hardwood allowing for repetition of curved edges throughout the collection. Where fixing was required, mechanical fasteners known a rivet or mild steel pins were used. The rivets are countersunk mild steel so can easily be recycled amongst the mild steel used. This allows for disassembly and transportation of large products.
A Set of Self Assembly Furniture - Eoin Colfer. The tension bench and sideboard have been designed to be simple and intuitive to assemble and disassemble for use in contemporary domestic interiors. The legs of the bench can be slotted into position without the need for glue, screws, nails or any joinery. The bench is held together by weight and the addition of tension. A rope runs over the top of the furniture and looping through the legs, using the tensioner mechanism underneath the user can tighten the bench twisting the mechanism clockwise. Using tension the piece of furniture becomes solid. With the straight forward instructions both the bench and sideboard can be assembled and taken apart in minutes.
Chameleon Unit - Cara Brennan. The product designed is a modular storage system consisting of small cubic modules. The modules can be used singularly or can be combined to create storage systems or units. The product is offered in 2 depth options, while the width and height are dictated by the number of combined modules, making its size variable and specific to the needs of the user. The modules can be undivided, have a singular dividing shelf or two drawers. The main aspect of the design is the varied options for the finished aesthetic. Custom sized exterior panels are attached to the sides, top and bottom of the storage unit. The panels are available in varied styles, such as modern, art deco, Victorian and more. The panels can simply be detached and replaced with new panels in a different style. This allows the user to keep this piece of furniture throughout any interior décor changes. The option for the modules to have doors is also available and there are a range of additional elements to accentuate the furniture in each style such as varied leg and handle options. These features make the design flexible and increases the life of the furniture, thereby making this a sustainable and consumer customisable product.

IWIN Learn Together Programme

The team here at IWIN are delighted to tell you about one of our most successful programmes that we have developed for IWIN members. Our 'Learn Together Programme' is a Peer to Peer sharing and learning initiative.

The aim of the programme is to get people in similar roles sharing their business, methods, experiences, processes and stories with each other to gain further ideas and practical advice to take control of their own organisations. It is representative of what IWIN is all about - to help our members grow their businesses through collaboration.

So, how does it work?

Small group of people from separate companies in similar roles and from similar size/type of organisations grouped together.
Each member will host the group for a half day visit to their company to go through their own role and how they perform their role, sharing their experience, processes, methods and stories to the group.
Each visit will include a presentation from host, factory tour focused on the particular role and networking opportunity over a meal.
The group will go from business to business each month until all members have presented.

The benefits for participants are:

Networking opportunity with people in similar roles, getting to discuss challenges and obligations of delivering results.
Practical, proven advice from similarly motivated peers.
Seeing first hand, at other business venues, how others perform their role and deliver results.
Sharing of ideas between peers who have been successful in delivery of the role.

Circular Upholstery Textile Project

We are delighted to report that our Circular Upholstery Textile (CUT) project funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland is off to a flying start.

Headed by the Irish Wood and Interiors Network, this government funded project will provide a framework to develop new circular products and circular business models aimed at increasing value, use and life of materials, products and assets and designing out waste from production and consumption in the textile upholstery sector.

We spent the summer visiting the factories of participating companies with Elaine Butler of the Circular Design Institute , and now the companies have just finished our third in-person workshop and round of coaching with design consultancy anois .

Already those involved are progressing three circular product concepts and three new industrial symbiosis opportunities.

A huge thank you to all those involved including Finline Furniture , Foxford , Botany Weaving , Respa Beds , Sofa Source International and Thomas Montgomery Ltd .
