(NBMDA) Distributors’ Event

What an amazing week we had in Chicago! Myself, Eoin Ryan from The Galtee Group , and Damian Woods from W.Howard 'The MDF Specialists' attended the North American Building Material Distribution Association (NBMDA) distributors’ event, with over 1,000 delegates present. I had the privilege to do a presentation on behalf of the Irish Wood & Interiors Network ( IWIN ), showcasing the expertise and capabilities of our member companies. I also shared our collaboration with Cieblink , who are launching a Product Information Management (PIM) software we are starting to implement in the network.
It was a brilliant opportunity to connect with dozens of prospective buyers, build key relationships, and generate leads for future business. We were lucky to be hosted by industry experts Freya Hannah (Cieblink) and David Smith from The David Smith Group, who introduced us to many of the top buyers/distributors in the US and Canadian markets. The event was packed with key figures from the North American and Canadian building materials supply industry, particularly woodworking products and sheet materials—a perfect fit for our network.
We also had some great experiences exploring Chicago, including seeing 9-time Grammy winner, Buddy Guy, perform live—an unforgettable night! We toured the city and had a productive meeting with David O'Flaherty of Enterprise Ireland USA , who shared that Chicago is home to 200,000 Irish diaspora, 25,000 of whom are in construction—highlighting the strong cultural ties and opportunities for Irish suppliers in this market.
The US is open for business—with trade from China down, buyers are actively looking for alternatives. For Irish companies ready to supply, there’s a real chance to make an impact.
It was a smashing week, and we’re excited for what’s ahead!

Great to visit WorldSkills Ireland 2025 at the RDS this week — over 180 competitors across 48 skills, with 38,000+ visitors exploring careers in everything from carpentry to advanced manufacturing.
A real highlight was seeing ATU Connemara and TU Dublin students in action, particularly in joinery — an area central to the Irish Contract Interiors sector.
For IWIN member companies, this isn’t just a competition — it’s a recruitment opportunity. Events like this connect us directly with the next generation of talent.
As Ronan Murphy from Sisk put it:

IWIN Annual Golf Day – Carton House 2025 Recap
Over 60 attendees and 50 golfers took to the fairways at Carton House on September 11th for the IWIN Annual Golf Day — and what a day it was. Sunshine, great company, and more sand than the Sahara made for a fun mix of competition and craic.
Huge thanks to Liam Mc Cool and the Carton House team for top-class hospitality all day.
Winners of the day
Jack O’Connor (Kerry GAA), Dick Clerkin (Clerkin Consulting), Eoin Ryan (Galtee Group), and Alan O Grady O’Grady (Western Postform) — 102 points.
Honourable mention to OVVO (99 points), who argued their combined age of over 300 should have earned them a bonus prize or at least a cup of tea and a sit-down.

17th Redevelopment Summit in Lisbo

Just back from the 17th Redevelopment Summit in Lisbon, hosted by GBB Venture s, and what an excellent event it was! The format provided invaluable opportunities to connect with key figures from the Saudi construction industry and showcase the best of Ireland’s contract interior manufacturing. We had brilliant conversations and insightful meetings that we hope will bring lasting value to our members. The Saudi market, with its ambitious 2030 vision and $2 trillion in planned investment, offers incredible opportunities for those ready to engage and build strong supply chain partnerships. From cutting-edge cities to luxurious Red Sea resorts, we’re excited about Ireland’s potential to be a key player in this dynamic market. It was nice to note that we weren't the only Irish at the event - it was inspiring to see Mark Kennedy , Head of Design at NEOM Magna, present the futuristic vision for the Magna project, which includes a stretch of 120km along the Red Sea coast, featuring 12 distinct resorts. LIGNA machinery show in Germany

It has been an action-packed couple of days at the LIGNA machinery show in Germany. The speed at which technology is advancing in the woodworking industry is both exciting and a bit daunting. Many robotics and AI solutions are being adopted, particularly in areas such as sanding, storage, and assembly.

One impressive highlight was an AI-enhanced CNC machine on display, which allowed users to interact directly with the machines via Chat. For instance, you could explain a request, such as creating a replacement gable for a previous order, and the machine could just do it without sending a program instruction. Or even ask it for performance stats etc.

Some great banter was had on the familiar Combilift stand as we witnessed a bit of expert haggling take place between Monaghan ( Martin McVicar ) and Galway ( Derek Deane )...not sure who won out, time will tell:). It is certainly impressive to see Combilift fly the flag at such a landmark show. A special thanks to Martin and for the warm welcome.

Eoin Carroll is a data analytics and strategy specialist with over ten years’ experience helping businesses unlock the value of their data. With a background in engineering, analytics, and business intelligence, he has worked with multinationals and SMEs across manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and retail sectors. He leads a team delivering business intelligence, predictive modelling, and digital strategies that drive efficiency and growth.

As the founder of his own business, Eoin understands the challenges SMEs face. The Head of Operations at Uconia - Jason Carey

Jason Carey is a technology and performance specialist within the construction and manufacturing sectors. He is currently the Head of Operations at Uconia , a digital project management platform where he helps companies and projects streamline their site operations using Lean Last Planner principles, AI, and dashboard reporting. Wayloader is currently operating across multiple projects in Ireland, UK and Europe.

Prior to this, Jason spent nearly six years at Errigal , where he was Head of Innovation and Analytics, leading major digital transformation initiatives both internally and on live construction projects. His work included integrating machine learning on-site using 360-degree camera computer vision technology, developing an in-house facial recognition system and a bespoke Errigal App, and investing in IoT wearables to drive performance and improve health and safety across teams on-site.

Jason holds a Master’s in Software Design with Artificial Intelligence, his innovative mindset ensures he is always looking ahead and brings a strong focus on how data and digital tools can translate into real-world performance gains — in business and beyond.

Away from the tech world, Jason remains a top-level Gaelic footballer with Scotstown GAA. He has been fortunate to be part of a successful team and values the link between team performance in a sporting context and the business world.

At this event, Jason will share insights on how emerging technologies, such as AI and advanced digital tools, are being applied in live construction and manufacturing environments — and what that means for the future of operations and leadership in our industry.

This is a major milestone for IWIN members and a significant step forward in uniting our industry. Key Goals This Year Within The IWIN Network

We have made significant progress on this platform and hope to launch it in April 2025. Industry Event at ATU Connemara

�� Great Day at ATU Connemara
Last Thursday, I had the chance to attend an industry event at ATU Connemara where 15 or so companies from the contract interiors sector came together to meet with students and showcase what career opportunities are out there.
It was really interesting to hear the presentations from different companies and see just how much potential there is in this industry for young people to build fantastic careers. One that really stood out to me was The Deluxe Group — their work on some of the world's biggest theme parks and cruise ships is seriously impressive.
We're lucky in Ireland to have some amazing companies in this sector, like Specialist Group , The Deluxe Group , GEM Joinery , Western Postform Limited and Johnston Shopfitters , MLK Mark Lohan Kitchens , Merenda and Castlebrook , to name just a few.
Fair play to Paul Leamy and the team who organised the event — it was a great way for the industry to see the brilliant talent coming out of ATU Connemara every year.
If you're in the contract interiors industry, I'd definitely recommend getting involved in this event in the future. It's well worth it if you're looking to connect with top young talent who could make a big difference in your company’s future.

A Visit to O'Donnell Furniture Makers

I had the pleasure of visiting Katherine O'Sullivan and Aodh O Donnell at O'Donnell Furniture Makers in Skibbereen, a founding member of the Irish Wood and Interiors Network. They gave me a warm welcome after my long trip from Monaghan, and I was impressed by their extensive, state-of-the-art premises.

O'Donnell Furniture has been crafting bespoke furniture for over 120 years, serving hospitality giants like Marriott, Hilton, and Crowne Plaza, while also creating custom pieces for the residential and marine sectors. Their work spans Ireland, the UK, and Europe, proudly flying the flag for Irish manufacturing on an international stage.

It was particularly interesting to hear about the logistical gymnastics involved in getting their furniture delivered and installed in some far-flung locations. It’s clear that their expertise isn’t just in making quality furniture—it’s in ensuring it arrives flawlessly, no matter where in the world the project takes them.

Beyond their reputation for quality craftsmanship, O’Donnell Furniture has taken an unexpected but fascinating step—repurposing part of their factory to provide unique studio facilities for the Irish filmmaking industry. This has brought real buzz to the local community, with the extra economic activity that comes with film production, but it also shows O'Donnell's readiness to diversify and think outside the box. Who knows, we might be spotting an O’Donnell wardrobe in the background of a hit Netflix show!"**

A Visit to Holbein Joinery in Kenmare!
I recently had the chance to visit Holbein Joinery in Kenmare, Co. Kerry, and see the skill and craftsmanship behind their work. Oliver Holbein and Colm Holbein are second-generation joiners, continuing a tradition that started over 35 years ago when their father, Manfred Holbein, founded the business. Originally from Germany, Manfred brought his expertise in fine furniture-making to Ireland, blending traditional European techniques with locally sourced materials. Today, Oliver and Colm are building on that legacy, producing high-quality joinery and furniture across Kerry and Cork.
With Kenmare’s stunning landscape as a backdrop, it’s clear why sustainability is such a big focus for them. Their eco-friendly approach, combined with expert craftsmanship, sets them apart in the industry.
As part of IWIN , we’re delighted to support Holbein Joinery as they continue to grow. With plans for a major factory expansion, exciting times are ahead, and I’m looking forward to seeing where they go next.

I recently had the opportunity to visit Paul McKenna , Managing Director of W.Howard 'The MDF Specialists' , for a factory tour. It was impressive to see how the company has embraced automation and lean processes to thrive in an ultra-competitive market both domestically and internationally.

What stood out most was the team’s commitment and engagement to continuous improvement. They take real pride in their work, actively contribute to improvements, and create a positive and productive environment.

Surface Design Show 2025

Last week, I enjoyed an interesting day exploring the Surface Design Show 2025 at London's Business Design Centre! The event showcased impressive innovations in surface materials and sustainable technologies.

A highlight was connecting with IWIN member Ronan Haslette from Merenda at the Alpi S.p.A. stand, a renowned Italian high-end veneer and surface manufacturer with some very interesting architectural finishes.

My final company visit of the year was to Kelwood Beautifully Crafted Wood Windows and Doors (Kells Windows and Doors and Konic Doors), the latest member to join IWIN . Declan and Matthew Grimes, second-generation owner-managers, craft exquisite timber sash windows and exterior doors. The intricate detail and skilled craftsmanship that go into each of their products are world-class and unique in the industry.

Kells Windows has supplied prestigious homes across Ireland, the UK, and the US, and they are set to expand further into these markets. Everything is made to order and customised to client specifications. They use only premium hardwoods or Accoya, materials known for delivering outstanding performance for decades. The blend of fine detail and beautiful finishes, combined with exceptional durability, truly sets Kells apart in the market.

All of this is achieved by a highly skilled team operating in a modern facility equipped with multiple new CNC machines and an automated spray line. Impressively, they even mix their own colors to ensure they can guarantee the performance and finish of their products.

In addition to their standard offerings, Kells provides restoration services and bespoke designs, catering to both traditional and contemporary styles. Their commitment to sustainability is evident through their use of environmentally friendly materials and practices.

Recently, I made the trip to Edenderry, County Offaly, to visit FJS Joinery Solutions and DWK Kitchens to welcome them as new members of IWIN .

From the moment I arrived, their knowledgeable team gave me a warm welcome. Their showroom is impressive, showcasing everything from beautifully crafted traditional in-frame kitchens to sleek, modern designs. As Tom Glynn , the owner, explained, they aim to offer something for everyone, no matter the taste or budget.

Tom gave me an excellent tour of the factory, giving me a real sense of what makes this company successful. It comes down to two key things: first, a commitment to investing in the business by upgrading technology and improving working conditions and second, a focus on building a strong team. This was clear from the showroom staff to the workshop team, where everyone was hard at work, keeping productivity high.

Tom is supported by his sons, Ryan and Ross, ensuring the company has a bright future. FJS and DWK Kitchens are in a strong position, serving both private residential customers through their kitchen business and the commercial interiors market with their bespoke joinery capabilities. This balance allows them to stay adaptable and resilient in changing markets.

What stands out most is their focus on customer satisfaction. From the moment a customer steps into the showroom to the installation and aftercare, everything is done with the customer experience in mind. This is reflected in their excellent reviews, feedback, and strong word-of-mouth referrals.

On a recent visit to their factory, I was given a very warm welcome and got to see first-hand the fantastic work they’re doing. Topopal, an Irish-owned company, specialises in the manufacture and installation of laboratory, cleanroom, and workspace furniture, supporting sectors like medical devices, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, education, and technology.

In addition to this, they’ve recently expanded their product range to include kitchens and worktops, showcasing their adaptability and commitment to meeting diverse customer needs.

It’s inspiring to see the second generation of the business driving it forward with such energy and focus. The progress they’ve made in recent years has been outstanding, and it’s clear they’re on track to achieve even greater success.

When siblings work together in a family business, people often think it’s a recipe for conflict. But in my experience, when they’re on the same page and share a vision, they can make fierce progress. EMP Furniture is a great example of this.

Based in Williamstown, Co. Galway, EMP Furniture Manufacturers Ltd has been making beautiful, custom-made furniture since 1981. They’ve become a go-to name for furniture in schools, hotels, and hospitals across Ireland.

One thing that stood out to me when learning about EMP Furniture is the immaculate presentation of their business. Despite this adversity, Timeless Sash has emerged stronger and more resilient than ever. The owner, Barry Callaghan embodies the spirit of resilience, drive, and ambition, guiding the company towards a successful recovery.

Witnessing the brand-new facility, the cutting-edge machinery in operation and the dedicated staff in full flow is fantastic to see given their setback. Barry's focus on not just recovery but also on future growth and international expansion sets a promising path ahead for the company. Supported by a skilled workforce of over 60 individuals, there is an obvious collective vision to elevate the company to new heights.

Additionally, Timeless Sash operates a separate refurbishment factory nearby, where century-old sash windows and doors are meticulously restored to their original grandeur. Alan Farrell, their production manager, oversees every detail with precision and commitment to save and restore as much original timber, glass and hardware as possible.

In every successful company I’ve visited in the IWIN network, there’s one thing that really stands out: the owners and managers are always eager to grow and are genuinely optimistic about the future. There’s no one-size-fits-all path to success, but that mix of drive and belief seems to be the perfect starting point. Once that spark is there, they find ways to overcome challenges and make things happen.

George Quinn are market leaders in stair parts manufacturing, supplying joineries and builder providers both in Ireland and the UK. Martin tells me the trend of modernising existing staircases from traditional spindle turnings to a contemporary clean line and minimalistic design has driven the demand for their product in recent years. I had a very interesting visit to one of our IWIN members, P&L Group , in Trim, Co. Meath, where I met with directors Gerard Lee and Tom Potterton . What stood out during the tour was their impressive joinery facility, which allows them to maintain "in-house" control over their fitout projects and enables them to take on even the most complex custom joinery elements. But what truly sets them apart is their ability to handle large-scale, complex projects.

With a client list that includes many of Ireland's top 20 construction companies, P&L Carpentry Group has worked on landmark projects like Leinster House. They also successfully work directly with the client alongside main contractors, helping streamline project delivery. Their team of over fifty people ensures that each project is managed and delivered on time and within budget.

They’ve also made some smart investments recently, such as a 5-axis CNC machine to enhance their joinery capabilities, and they utilize a custom-built mobile app on-site to provide real-time updates to clients and contractors—keeping everyone in the loop. Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting MEDITE SMARTPLY in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, and meeting with some of the team there, including Rory Rice , Liam Ryan and David Murray . I also had the opportunity to tour their impressive plant where I got to see first-hand the scale and complexity of their MDF production.

Medite is a major player in the MDF and OSB market supplying Ireland, UK, Benelux Countries and the US. They employ over 300 skilled technicians who keep their highly sophisticated machinery running smoothly across both plants in Clonmel and Waterford.

What really sets them apart is their commitment to innovation and sustainability. As part of the Coillte Group, they source their raw materials from sustainably managed forests in Ireland and by converting timber into MDF, they help store carbon in building projects for generations.

Coillte - The future of construction

I had an eye-opening visit to Coillte Nursery in Ballintemple. Listening to the energetic and passionate Ronan O'Keeffe on a tour around the beautiful Carlow countryside, it is hard not to come to the conclusion that the future of construction lies in timber.

With 400 acres dedicated to germinating and processing 30 million trees annually for the Irish Forestry Industry, we have a sustainable resource to meet our construction and joinery needs for generations. The end product is suitable for a wide variety of timber frame construction. Also domestic companies like MEDITE SMARTPLY transform this plentiful supply of home grown raw material into high performing versatile building material such as high quality MDF, Tricoya and OSB.

Through innovative cross-pollination methods, the nursery team has significantly improved tree quality, resulting in faster-growing, denser, and straighter trees with fewer irregularities. A more carbon-hungry tree that will effectively sequester carbon for generations is the result.

Interestingly, one of the techniques in use at the nursery is called "grafting" which involves wrapping a sapling in a branch of a mature tree to trick it into producing seed in less than a year as opposed to 20 years in a natural environment. This radically reduces the amount of time it takes to evolve more effective variants.

The forestry industry's impact on sustainability goals and net-zero targets is significant. Embracing timber as a primary construction material can play a crucial role in achieving a more sustainable future.

Super day at Topform Ltd with David Prendergast where I got the tour of their excellent factory. Thank you to Paul Glynn for the invite. Topform are market leaders in kitchen worktop manufacturing and export much of their product to UK and Europe. They embrace Lean practices and a hunger for continuous improvement is clearly evident with management and staff. Their dedication to quality, service and efficiency allows them to compete with global suppliers in an ultra competitive market.

Many companies I visit see Lean manufacturing as a "one and done" exercise and often only attempt it when a consultant is hired. But Lean requires cultural change and a discipline to continue to improve working practices every single day. Finding just that 1% improvement on a consistent basis compounds to deliver dramatic results.

Walking through the factory floor of Topform and its environs you immediately notice there is no waste, stock pile of off cuts, waste packaging or dust accumulation. Raw material is stored with precision and easy access. The workflow is seamless and logical and the environment is calm and productive. Our industry could learn much from companies like Topform.

I wish all the team there continued success.

Recently, I had the privilege of touring the exceptional facilities of Atlantic Technological University (Letterfrack), thanks to Paul Leamy , Paddy Tobin, and Dermot O'Donovan . It was a pleasure visiting Allwood Architectural Joinery with Gerard Magee for a factory tour. Despite facing adversity with a fire incident in 2024, the team at Allwood is moving forward with boundless energy and optimism. TU Dublin GradX 2023

IWIN were delighted to be asked to evaluate students' work at GradX, the Graduate Exhibition of TU Dublin School of Art and Design, BA Interior / Furniture Design programme (TU975). On behalf of IWIN, a panel of four judges arrived at GradX to view and discuss the work of the students. The panel were: Enda McGonigle from Sofa Source ; Joe Friel from WoodConnect ; Gareth Sherry from IWIN and Sean Philips from OVVO . All four were extremely impressed with the quality and variety of work on display. In particular, the noted the quality of concepts and engagement with very current issue for the furniture, design and production industries. The panel were tasked to award under two broad categories (1) Innovation and (2) Commerciality. The panel were unanimous that more than two projects deserved recognition. Two awards were presented in each category with each recipient receiving a 100 Euro one-for-all voucher and a one year membership of IWIN. All the projects and eight others will be featured on the TU Dublin & IWIN stand at the IFHS show from 2nd to 4th July.

GradX is the highlight of the academic year for students and staff and affords students the opportunity to showcase their imagination, hard work and creativity. IWIN are very keen to build connections and relationships between our industry and education institutes. Linking the future drivers of our industry is so important towards our members' long-term success.

Minim - Carmina Smali. Minim is a project that researches the principle of modernism with the aim of creating simple, interesting, functional and, above all sustainable products. Designers are responsible for what they produce and the decisions they make. Precisely for this reason, having a product that performs multiple functions and, at the same time, takes the environment into consideration, can be considered one more step towards a more sustainable future. Minim offers a series of lamps that will illuminate your home. Lamps that are different from each other, but which have the common task of lasting longer, having simple and natural materials such as wood, or the possibility of reusing components or washing them. The different shapes and appearances of the lamps thus offer a variety for every taste to the customer. Minim is a project that minimises forms but maximises functionality.
Design for Disassembly - Laura MacSweeney. This collection of furniture was designed as take-apart technology. The collection consists of three individual materials. This material can be manipulated in multiple ways creating surfaces and texture. For structural purposes, waste mild steel, also known as conduit, was used as well as locally sourced ash hardwood allowing for repetition of curved edges throughout the collection. Where fixing was required, mechanical fasteners known a rivet or mild steel pins were used. The rivets are countersunk mild steel so can easily be recycled amongst the mild steel used. This allows for disassembly and transportation of large products.
A Set of Self Assembly Furniture - Eoin Colfer. The tension bench and sideboard have been designed to be simple and intuitive to assemble and disassemble for use in contemporary domestic interiors. The legs of the bench can be slotted into position without the need for glue, screws, nails or any joinery. The bench is held together by weight and the addition of tension. A rope runs over the top of the furniture and looping through the legs, using the tensioner mechanism underneath the user can tighten the bench twisting the mechanism clockwise. Using tension the piece of furniture becomes solid. With the straight forward instructions both the bench and sideboard can be assembled and taken apart in minutes.
Chameleon Unit - Cara Brennan. The product designed is a modular storage system consisting of small cubic modules. The modules can be used singularly or can be combined to create storage systems or units. The product is offered in 2 depth options, while the width and height are dictated by the number of combined modules, making its size variable and specific to the needs of the user. The modules can be undivided, have a singular dividing shelf or two drawers. The main aspect of the design is the varied options for the finished aesthetic. Custom sized exterior panels are attached to the sides, top and bottom of the storage unit. The panels are available in varied styles, such as modern, art deco, Victorian and more. The panels can simply be detached and replaced with new panels in a different style. This allows the user to keep this piece of furniture throughout any interior décor changes. The option for the modules to have doors is also available and there are a range of additional elements to accentuate the furniture in each style such as varied leg and handle options. These features make the design flexible and increases the life of the furniture, thereby making this a sustainable and consumer customisable product.

IWIN Learn Together Programme

The team here at IWIN are delighted to tell you about one of our most successful programmes that we have developed for IWIN members. Our 'Learn Together Programme' is a Peer to Peer sharing and learning initiative.

The aim of the programme is to get people in similar roles sharing their business, methods, experiences, processes and stories with each other to gain further ideas and practical advice to take control of their own organisations. It is representative of what IWIN is all about - to help our members grow their businesses through collaboration.

So, how does it work?

Small group of people from separate companies in similar roles and from similar size/type of organisations grouped together.
Each member will host the group for a half day visit to their company to go through their own role and how they perform their role, sharing their experience, processes, methods and stories to the group.
Each visit will include a presentation from host, factory tour focused on the particular role and networking opportunity over a meal.
The group will go from business to business each month until all members have presented.

The benefits for participants are:

Networking opportunity with people in similar roles, getting to discuss challenges and obligations of delivering results.
Practical, proven advice from similarly motivated peers.
Seeing first hand, at other business venues, how others perform their role and deliver results.
Sharing of ideas between peers who have been successful in delivery of the role.

Circular Upholstery Textile Project

We are delighted to report that our Circular Upholstery Textile (CUT) project funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland is off to a flying start.

Headed by the Irish Wood and Interiors Network, this government funded project will provide a framework to develop new circular products and circular business models aimed at increasing value, use and life of materials, products and assets and designing out waste from production and consumption in the textile upholstery sector.

We spent the summer visiting the factories of participating companies with Elaine Butler of the Circular Design Institute , and now the companies have just finished our third in-person workshop and round of coaching with design consultancy anois .

Already those involved are progressing three circular product concepts and three new industrial symbiosis opportunities.

A huge thank you to all those involved including Finline Furniture , Foxford , Botany Weaving , Respa Beds , Sofa Source International and Thomas Montgomery Ltd .
